In James (5:13–16) we find the Church ministering to the sick in a rite that included anointing with oil. In baptism, anointing with oil in the early church became a vivid sign of the belief that the new Christian was sealed with the Holy Spirit.
Oil for anointing the sick and the oil of baptism (chrism) will be blessed at this service, for use throughout our Diocese in the coming year.
During this service, oil to be blessed will be placed on the holy table in suitable vessels when the bread and wine are prepared, and we will pray:
"Send your Holy Spirit on this oil,
that those who in faith and repentance
receive this holy unction may be made whole,
and that those who are sealed with this chrism
may share in the royal priesthood
of Jesus Christ."
All are welcome to attend this service at noon on Thursday, April 17.
